Unpack that with Becca Allen

Hi! I’m Becca Allen.

I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, and Perinatal Mental Health Certified. I opened becca allen Counseling in early 2021 so that i Could have a better work life balance with my family.

A little bit about me: I’m a San Antonio native (Go Spurs Go!). I love this city and will never leave

I have two kids—a five-year-old and a two-year-old—who keep me plenty busy. I also have a very patient spouse who puts up with all of my ideas, some more intense than others. (I’m frequently sending him photos of dogs I want to adopt, new home ideas, or just a ton of random TikToks.)

Speaking of dogs, we have a French bulldog named Pierre. He’s our “only child” type of dog. absolutely the best, but also the most medically complicated pet I could have imagined. Consider this your friendly warning: Frenchies are adorable and cuddly, but they’re also hellaciously expensive. Budget accordingly!

How I became a counselor

People often ask how I chose this career. Honestly, I don’t have a grand origin story. it was something that fell into place at the right time and became something I truly love.

After graduating from Texas Tech (Wreck ’Em!), I had an unexpected gap year. back at home in san Antonio. My undergraduate degree didn’t directly lead to a specific job, so I started exploring options in San Antonio.

I discovered that UTSA’s downtown counseling program had an excellent reputation and it fit perfectly with where I was in life.

Like many in this field, I had to complete multiple unpaid internships as part of my training. One of those internships introduced me to the world of eating disorder treatment, and I’ve loved it ever since. I’ve spent the past decade deepening my education and skills in this area.

I’m deeply passionate about this work. It’s challenging and sometimes exhausting, but it’s also profoundly rewarding. I feel incredibly lucky to work with the clients by validating, supporting, challenging, and encouraging them is the best part of my job.

Why Start a Blog?

I wanted to create this blog as a space to share resources, ideas, and reflections. Think of it as a living library for anyone who wants to:

  • Care for their mental health

  • Learn about eating disorders

  • Explore perinatal mental health

  • Grieve losses in life

  • Understand body image and food relationships

  • Strengthen family and personal relationships

  • Set healthy boundaries

I love resources! my clients know this about me. I’m always making things specific for them: worksheets, handouts, recommendations. Even if you’re not my client, I want you to have access to helpful tools and information.

I hope this blog (Unpack That with Becca Allen) becomes a place you can return to for ideas, links, encouragement, and practical ways to support your own well-being.
